ANOTHER NOTE FROM CARMEL

Even though I am Carmel, Queen of Aram-Damascus, I still love my homeland of Tyre and my favorite color is still Tyrian Purple which I wear daily (and so does my little Anath wear her mother’s color).

Although I did not like King Ezron at first—because I thought he was too vain and proud—I have learned to love him over the many months I have been wed to him. I see his kind side and he is much more humble underneath his kingly pride. And he is so much more handsome when he smiles! (I never could think people were much handsome without a smile.)

Days pass and each hour brings me great joy. My house is being built and I watch every detail progress with thrilling anticipation! My nurse Zara and my two best maids, Eman and Damali, come with me every day to my little cedar house as we oversee the building (even Eman loves to think she is helping design my house—and I let her believe it; she has had some very good ideas).

Anath is growing healthy and stronger each day. Her hair is getting thicker and her eyes are coloring more green like my own.

Eman is slowly maturing one day at a time, but somehow I wonder if her maturing is good or bad. Some days she says the most embarrassing things—just when I think she’s quite the young lady. Nonetheless, she is quite entertaining.

Damali is just as stable as when I first met her. Now she guards my little Anath with such a fierceness like a tiger!

As for my old (yet still young) and faithful nurse Zara—she is just as sweet and kind as when I first remember her carrying me to the gardens to look at all the beautiful flowers.

Which reminds me, as soon as my house is finished I am going to plant many lovely flower gardens. And when Anath has grown a little, I will let her grow her very own flower garden. Back at the palace, I will build her a very little pool to keep her cool when we are not at my house in the mount.

Eman is now bouncing Anath with an unstoppable giggle, Zara is tidying up the house and Damali is bringing us all a tray of lamb on flatbread and honey cookies. The very smells are sending my stomach into growls!

A FEW FACTS

King Hiram I of Tyre reigned from 980-947 B.C. He was the friend of King David and King Solomon; he sent them both cedars of Lebanon. He also sent the materials to build King David’s house and King Solomon’s temple.

Dor was the manufacture center of Tyrian Purple. Bederi was one of its rulers.

Byblos is thought to be the oldest city in Lebanon. Byblos is also known for shipping its cedar for use of papyrus which Hebrew prophets used to write on; thus, the name of the Bible is named after Byblos.

In 965 B.C. Ezron, denied the kingship to the Aram-Zobah’s throne, fled Beqaa and became the king of Aram-Damascus by force.

In Phoenician, El means God, Ab means Father and Imm means Mother.
